Padel Americano works for 4 or more players β one of the reasons it's so popular. But the experience varies significantly by player count. Some numbers fill courts cleanly with no one sitting out; others require rotating byes. Here's what to expect at each common count.
The multiples-of-4 rule
Americano is designed around courts of 4 players (2 vs 2). Multiples of 4 β 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 β work most cleanly: every player is on a court every round, no byes needed, and everyone plays the same number of matches.
Numbers like 6, 10, 14 require 2 players to sit out each round (one bye pair). Numbers like 5, 9, 13 require 1 player to sit out. PadelBracket rotates byes automatically so no one sits out more than necessary.
By player count
4 players (1 court)
The minimum. One court, one match per round. Great for a quick session but the rotation is limited β after 3 rounds everyone has played with everyone. Best used for practice or a warmup before a bigger event.
6 players (1 court, 2 byes)
One court active at a time; 2 players sit out each round. The tournament still works well β 5 rounds covers all pairings. Takes roughly 60 minutes at 10 minutes per match.
8 players (2 courts)
The sweet spot for Americano. Two courts always full, 7 rounds to cover all pairings, runs in about 90 minutes. Easy to manage, everyone plays a lot. Most common setup for club social days.
10 players (2 courts, 2 byes)
Two courts, 2 players sit out per round. 9 rounds for full coverage. Slightly longer at roughly 100 minutes but still very manageable. Works well with the right group.
12 players (3 courts)
Three courts, no byes, 11 rounds for full coverage (approximately 2 hours). Can feel long β many groups play 7β8 rounds instead of the full schedule. A good tournament for a half-day event.
16 players (4 courts)
A proper club tournament. 4 courts always full, lots of matches. Full coverage takes 15 rounds (roughly 2.5 hours at 10 min matches). Most groups play 8β10 rounds and call it. PadelBracket handles the schedule either way.
20β24 players
5β6 courts needed. These are large-scale events β PadelBracket generates the full schedule but at this size you'll want multiple people helping with scoring. A 20-player Americano with 10-minute matches runs 3+ hours at full coverage.
How many rounds should you play?
For a clean result you want each player to have played with and against as many different players as possible. As a rule of thumb:
- 8 players: 5β7 rounds (all 7 for full coverage)
- 12 players: 6β9 rounds
- 16 players: 7β10 rounds
PadelBracket lets you stop at any round and the final leaderboard is shown immediately.
